(Stoney Creek) (Francis/Beattie) WHEREAS, July 1, 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion, which has played a vital role in supporting veterans, promoting remembrance, and strengthening communities across Canada; WHEREAS, Royal Canadian Legion Battlefield Branch 622 is a long-standing and highly visible community hub located in the historic downtown core of Stoney Creek, serving as a central gathering place for veterans and the broader community; WHEREAS, City Council has previously demonstrated leadership in commemorating veterans through initiatives such as the Remembrance Day crosswalk dedicated to veterans, which was among the first of its kind in Canada and has since been replicated in communities across the country; WHEREAS, the proposed Centennial Enhancement Project includes exterior cleaning and painting necessary to preserve the building, prevent further deterioration, and avoid more costly repairs in the future; WHEREAS, the project also includes a future mural dedicated to veterans, creating a lasting tribute to service and sacrifice while enhancing the character of downtown Stoney Creek; WHEREAS, a 100th anniversary represents a significant milestone and an opportunity to visibly support veterans and invest in a key community landmark. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: (a) That funding in the upset limit of $44,500 be approved for the Centennial Enhancement Project at the Royal Canadian Legion, Battlefield Branch 622, funded from the Stoney Creek Compensation Royalties (Terrapure Landfill) Reserve (#117036); and, (b) That the funds be transferred to Royal Canadian Legion Battlefield Branch 622 to complete the exterior cleaning, painting, and veteran's mural.
